Charge Meal Policy

Chenango Valley

Student Meal Charges

The Chenango Valley School District Board of Education recognizes that on occasion students may fail to bring meal money to school. To ensure that students do not go hungry and to minimize the fiscal burden to the district, the Board will allow students to “charge” the cost of the meals (breakfast or lunch) to be paid back at a later date subject to the terms in this policy.

INTENT

The intent of this policy is to establish and communicate concise, reasonable and updated expectations for staff response associated with requests by individuals to charge meals provided by the Food Service Department.

STUDENT MEAL CHARGES (ALL BUILDINGS)
  • A student will be allowed to charge up to $15.00 on each student account balance. When an account (negative) balance exceeds $15.00, the Food Service office will contact the parent/guardian to inform of these charges and request payment. At no time will students be allowed to charge or purchase “extra” items or a la carte (snack) items when a negative balance exists.
  • The student will continue to be offered his/her choice of meal beyond the allowable $15.00 negative account balance and the charges will be added to the student’s account balance.
  • The District will utilize various escalating methods to collect on the overdue debt up to and including utilizing a “collection agency” process.
ADULT EMPLOYEES, VOLUNTEERS AND VISITORS
  • Adult charging of school meals is not authorized.
ANNUAL NOTIFICATION

The school district will provide notice to all parents on an annual basis prior to the opening day of school outlining the requirements of this policy. The policy shall also be published in an appropriate school-based publication.
